about

Written by Joe on the freeway while making his punishing commute from UCLA to his home in Signal Hill, CA, the song tells the fictional story of a real person, spotted by Joe's friend Tommy at the Taco Bell on PCH. He was a brother from the hood and his customized jacket proclaimed his title as "Illa Zilla Lady Killa."
The rest just wrote itself. Well actually, Stevo wanted to add to it so he came up with the verses about the fighting at the end. The version known as "Illa Zilla Lady Killa" from the album Slippery When Ill uses lyrics originally meant for the first version.

The drum beat is not the original one Joe came up with. Producer Thom Wilson heard Joe's beat and said, "look, guy, you gotta simplify this." That's what producers do.

This song was written before there was a Beastie Boys (well at least the rap version) and before the term "rap music" was known. Joe was inspired by Herbie Hancock, break dancing, and the Long Beach gang culture to write the song.

The scratching was a complete misinterpretation of what turn table scratching was. Joe built this thing called a "scratch box" for Stevo prior to the album's release. It was nothing more than a turntable with 8-track player and AM/FM receiver, with a guitar chord in the headphone jack hooked up to the PA. Stevo would just scratch the thing accross the grooves. We had no idea what we were doing. "Needle-less" to say, we needed a new one for each performance.

When Los Angeles radio station did their top 106 songs for 1984, this gem came in at number 5, astonishing the band.

lyrics

Mr. Playboy, Sir Weasel, Poppin Snake, and Mr. Cool - Went down to the boulevard to play their ass some pool
Illa Zilla, Illa Zilla, Illa Zilla - Lady Killer - Illa Zilla, Illa Zilla, Illa Zilla - Lady Killer
I'mfa for, I'mfa for, I'mfa dance' wit you
Here go one, here go one, here go one, woooo -
Mr. Flashdance, Old Bufu, Man Sam, and Doctor Boots Came down from the south town to score they ass some toots

Illa Zilla, Illa Zilla, Illa Zilla - Lady Killer - Illa Zilla, Illa Zilla, Illa Zilla - Lady Killer
I'mfa, I'mfa for, I'mfa dance wit you - Here go one, here go one, here go one, woooo

Well they came down looking to score but they got a whole lot more - When they started a fight on that frightful night - at Lady Killer's bar - Illa Zilla, Illa Zilla, Illa Zilla - Lady Killer - Illa Zilla, Illa Zilla, Illa Zilla - Lady Killer - I'mfa for, I'mfa for, I'mfa dancin' wit you Here go one, here go one, here go one, woooo - So if you have to leave your turf - you better not go far - Or start a fight on Friday night - in Lady Killer's Bar - Illa Zilla...
